The Truth About the Puppy Uglies
(Yes, it’s a real thing. No, your Pom isn’t broken.)
At Ravelle Pomeranians, we believe in honesty, love… and preparing you for The Uglies. What are the “Puppy Uglies,” you ask? Just the most awkward, hilarious, and slightly tragic phase in your Pomeranian’s glow-up journey.
Somewhere between 3 and 7 months of age, your perfectly puffed ball of fluff suddenly starts looking like a patchy little goblin with a questionable haircut. One day, they’re Instagram royalty. The next, they look like they lost a bet with a pair of clippers.
But fear not—it’s totally normal.

This is the awkward teenage phase of the Pom world, where their soft puppy coat sheds out, their adult coat hasn’t grown in yet, and they’re not quite sure what their ears, tail, or legs are doing. Honestly, some look like they’ve assembled themselves from leftover spare parts.
We like to call it the “ugly duckling” stage… only fluffier and with more sass.
What to Expect:
- Tufts. Bald spots. Fluffy ankles.
- A sudden resemblance to a fox, gremlin, or confused meerkat.
- A Pom who looks personally offended if you mention it.
- An adorable personality that stays perfectly intact!
Don’t panic, don’t shave, and don’t hide your pup from the world (we promise, it’s a phase, not a life sentence). Before you know it, your Pom will blossom into their full, fabulous coat and become the walking cloud you dreamed of.
So embrace the Uglies. Laugh. Take photos. Celebrate the transformation.
Because behind every fabulous Pom… is a very awkward teenager.

🧡 Top Tips to Survive the Puppy Uglies
1. Take Too Many Photos
They’ll come in handy when you’re bragging about the glow-up later. Trust us—awkward teen Pom pics are gold.
2. Don’t Shave or Clip
Seriously. Resist the urge. Shaving a Pom can permanently damage their coat and mess with its regrowth. Let nature (and fluff) take its course.
3. Stay on Top of Grooming
Even if they’re patchy, regular brushing helps with coat transition and keeps the skin healthy. Think of it as brushing through the chaos.
4. Feed High-Quality Nutrition
A healthy diet helps support coat development from the inside out. It won’t speed things up, but it will help them glow when the time comes.
5. Be Patient—and Laugh Often
This stage is weird, but it’s also endearing. Your pup doesn’t care what they look like—they just want to play, snuggle, and steal your socks.
6. Connect With Other Pom Parents
Misery loves company—and so do Pom people. Share the ugly phase online or with friends who’ve been through it too.
7. Trust the Process
Your Pomeranian will be fluffy again. Probably fluffier than you imagined. And they’ll thank you for not giving up on their awkward little mullet.
